The Hamamatsu Museum of Musical Instruments was established in April 1995 as part of Hamamatsu City's "Music Town Development" program that has been promoted since 1981, and is the first public museum of musical instruments in Japan.
The museum collects ・ and preserves musical instruments and materials related to musical instruments from all over the world, conducts research ・ and exhibits musical instruments from all over the world equally from the same perspective without bias.
The collection consists of 3300 actual musical instruments (1750 from Europe, 630 from Asia, 160 from Oceania, 230 from Africa, 200 from America, 330 from Japan), 150 non-instrumental materials such as scores ・ paintings ・ sculptures, etc., Japanese books ・ Western books and other library materials 12,000 items, CDs ・ 2,000 audiovisual materials such as video tapes, etc.
